Just a quick note from here at Heritage Oak Winery…
The year is flying by and just like that Harvest 2016 is upon us.
I’m sure you’ve noticed as you travel around the countryside surrounding Lodi, the signs of the grape harvest are everywhere. Trucks and bins parked next to vineyards, columns of slow-moving tractors hogging the roadways (almost made me late for work today!), clusters of fully ripened grapes hanging from the vines and teams of vineyard workers (or mechanical harvesters) descending into the field posed to grab those grapes.
And it is no different here at Heritage Oak. The grape clusters are getting plump, the whites are a nice green (or grey green as is the case for the Pinot Gris) and the reds are showing lots of color. Tom’s been monitoring the grapes for brix and pH and prepping the vineyard for harvest. And when the numbers are all just right, and the vineyard prepped, Tom has to be ready to pounce. Tanks needed to be empty, cleaned and ready – all the crushing equipment cleaned and ready – orders for yeasts received and ready to go. As harvest nears, there is always a lot to do.
And pounce he has. Yesterday when I left at the end of the day my expectation was that harvest here at Heritage Oak would commence Sunday night. So, much to my surprise as I came to work today, Tom’s crew was pulling trailers full of small yellow bins, each bin full of the green grapes of Chardonnay. The crusher, the press, the pumps, and the crew were hard it at destemming, crushing and pumping the juice over into tanks ready to start the fermentation process. Yup, just like that, 2016 harvest is not only upon us, but is underway.
So far the harvest looks very good and holds a lot of promise for the 2016 vintage. And while it will be awhile before we can start tasting the 2016come on by the tasting room for a taste from our current and long wine lineup – to enjoy the wine and enjoy the moment.
Oh, and a P.S. If this is the onset of another crush, that means two other things. One, my splash gang partner and mentor, Hailey, and her hubby, Ron, are coming up to their first anniversary. My hat’s off to them! And two, I’ve been blogging away here at Heritage Oak Winery for a little over a year.
