News and rumors from the Corporate Office . . .
Did you see Bob Highfill’s article, “Surprising Sauvignon blanc from Heritage Oak”, about Tom’s 2015 SB? It ran in the Stockton Record last Wednesday, June 15th and then in the Lodi News Sentinel on Thursday, June 16th. Bob visited the winery a few weeks back and interviewed Tom, tasted the 2015 SB (Tom had just released it when Bob came in) and chatted about the winemaking process. It is a good article and describes the 2015 SB quite well, so there is really no need for me prattle on about it here other than to say it is delightful. Bob picked up grapefruit in the aroma, but I don’t, I get more floral tropical fruit aromas. Everyone is different and one man’s grapefruit may be another’s mango. And, no . . . Tom did not move the winery to Victor. We are still located in the beautiful setting just north of the Mokelumne River in Acampo, just as always. If you still have the Thursday’s version of the New Sentinel around look closely at the picture accompanying the article, it shows Tom gazing through a glass of red wine. Now I’m no wine expert but the last time I checked SB was a white wine! But I am being oh so picky — the important thing is that Tom’s 2015 SB is a hit.
There are rumors swirling about here in the Tasting Room, filtering down from the Corporate Office above. I’m picking up threads of conversation that there will be a wine sale sometime soon. I’m not sure what, when or for how long, but the rumors seem to be persistent so that is a good sign. Watch your e-mail basket for details.
Also, I have it on pretty good authority from an anonymous source that there will be a futures sale on cases of Tom’s upcoming releases. And as I’ve noted in the past, Tom has lots of good surprises just resting in the barrel room so it could all be fun and a chance to stock up on great wine at a nice price as long as you can be a little patient. My source wouldn’t reveal details, but based on snooping around among the barrels, I know that there is a Barbara, a Malbec, another Zinjo (fun stuff), Block 14 Zinfandel (yum, yum, yum), Tempranillo (and on and on and on) back there, so who knows what this rumored future sale will include. Again, stay tuned to your e-mail basket for details.
And speaking of e-mail baskets, be sure to watch for notice of our next “Growler Refill Weekend.” Another one should be coming up before too much longer. Find your ole Heritage Oak Bare Zin jug, dust it off, and bring it in for a fill-up of the 2015 Zinfandel with a touch of oak — fun stuff for the summertime.
Things are just booming in the vineyards. Harvest will be here before you know it.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention for all our Wine Clubbers that the annual Heritage Oak Wine Club BBQ is coming up on July 23rd from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Good BBQ, good food, good wine and good music from Calico. I suspect Tom will preview a wine or two, just like he did at last year’s WC BBQ. Remember he brought out the 2013 Zinjo and the 2013 Petite as a sneak peek? Both were a hit that evening. I had fun in the Tasting Room the next day with a bit of the Zinjo that was left over. I’d pour a taste for customers and invariably they would say, “Oh wow, I’ll take a bottle (or two or three or…) of that.” I’d smile and just say, “Sorry, not released yet.” And by the way the Petite previewed last year, it is now one of this quarter’s wine club recommendations and tasting great.
One last thing, in honor and recognition of the Golden State Warriors and the Splash Brothers (Thompson and Curry), Hailey and I have decided we are the “Splash Gang,” No matter what the outcome of Game 7 of the Finals, come on by the Tasting Room and let Hailey or me pour you a “splash.” Enjoy the wine, enjoy the moment.
